A new piece of retro hardware is aiming to bridge more than two decades of Nintendo handheld history. Drewworks' RetroSync Wireless Adapter is designed to connect original Game Boy Advance hardware with compatible Pokémon releases on the Nintendo Switch family.
Original hardware, modern connection
RetroSync plugs into the Game Boy Advance link port and uses USB-C for power. According to Drewworks, no modification to the GBA or original Game Pak is required. The adapter handles the wireless connection so supported in-game features can communicate with compatible Switch software.
Current GBA support centres on Pokémon FireRed, LeafGreen and Emerald. Supported features include trading, single and double battles, multi battles and several wireless mini-games. Drewworks also lists compatibility with the Game Boy Advance SP and Game Boy Player, while Game Boy Micro use requires Nintendo's link-cable adapter.
Early December release
Drewworks currently lists RetroSync for release in early December 2026. UK specialist coverage reports a £39 price point, with the developer's store listing the hardware at around $50 in the US.
The project is particularly interesting because it keeps the original cartridge and handheld at the centre of the experience rather than replacing them with emulation. Firmware updates are planned for future improvements, although Drewworks notes that compatibility can potentially be affected by future system or software updates.
Console Revive take
This is exactly the sort of accessory that makes original handheld hardware more useful rather than obsolete. Keeping a real GBA, original cartridge and link-port experience involved while connecting it to modern Nintendo hardware is a neat example of retro and current gaming meeting in the middle.
For anyone restoring or upgrading original Nintendo handheld hardware, Console Revive also carries Game Boy Advance SP parts and upgrades.
