xeRAbora Brings RetroAchievements to Original PlayStation 2 Hardware

RetroAchievements are usually associated with emulators, but the experimental xeRAbora project takes a different approach: it tracks achievements while games run on an original PlayStation 2.

How it works

Created by developer hacan359, xeRAbora works with a customised Open PS2 Loader and a companion client on the local network. The PS2 continues to run the game, while the client checks gameplay data against achievement conditions and updates the player's RetroAchievements account. An unlock can also appear as a brief gold flash on the TV.

What players should know

This is an alpha-stage homebrew project, not a finished consumer product. It requires a network-capable PS2, a compatible game and additional setup. The developer has tested USB and original-disc play, but original-disc support is experimental. Current support is limited to Softcore achievements, and some achievements that use indirect memory references cannot unlock. Readers should consult the latest documentation before trying it.

Console Revive take

xeRAbora shows how retro gaming can gain modern features without abandoning original hardware. For enthusiasts who value their real PS2 consoles, it is an encouraging example of homebrew extending the life of classic systems. We would treat the current alpha as a fascinating experiment rather than a polished everyday solution.
