BrickStation Could Turn the LEGO PlayStation Into a Playable PS1 — Without Permanent Modifications

Summary: A display-only LEGO PlayStation could become a functioning retro gaming system thanks to BrickStation, an unofficial prototype from the team behind BrickBoy. The add-on promises PS1 emulation, HDMI output and support for original PlayStation memory cards — while keeping the LEGO model reversible.

A console hiding inside a display model

LEGO's PlayStation set recreates the familiar grey console, controller and opening lid, but it is not a functioning games machine. Substance Labs wants to bridge that gap. BrickStation replaces the model's removable Ape Escape side tray with a self-contained electronics module rather than requiring permanent alterations to the brick-built console.

According to details shared by technical lead Thomas Bertani, the prototype connects to a television over HDMI and runs PlayStation games through software emulation. Bluetooth and USB controllers are supported, while games can be loaded from microSD. This is not a miniature original PS1 motherboard, and the decorative disc space is not a working optical drive.

Original memory cards are part of the plan

One particularly interesting feature for collectors is compatibility with original PS1 memory cards. The team also describes a route for using personally owned game discs: attach an external USB CD-ROM drive, copy the game data to microSD, and play from there. Compatibility and practical performance will need to be assessed once finished hardware is available.

BrickStation also aims to reproduce the familiar ritual of powering up a PlayStation. The model's power button activates the electronics, while a speaker and vibration motor simulate the sound and feel of the original disc mechanism. Substance Labs says the conversion can be reversed without modifying the LEGO set.

What is confirmed — and what is not?

BrickStation remains a prototype. Its Kickstarter pre-launch page is available, but the campaign's final price, production schedule and retail availability have not been confirmed. The LEGO PlayStation set itself is a separate purchase.

Console Revive take

We love mods that make retro hardware more useful without destroying what makes it special. BrickStation is an intriguing crossover between display collecting and emulation, especially because of its original-memory-card ambitions. It is not a replacement for authentic PS1 hardware, though: collectors who prefer restoring and playing on the original console can explore our PlayStation parts, mods and accessories.
