Croc Is Coming to ModRetro M64 on Cartridge in 2027 — Nearly 30 Years After Its PlayStation Debut

A PlayStation-era favourite is making an unexpected journey into Nintendo 64 territory. Argonaut Games has revealed a physical cartridge edition of Croc: Legend of the Gobbos for ModRetro's M64, with a planned release in 2027.

A different destination for a 1997 platformer

Croc originally appeared in 1997 on PlayStation, Sega Saturn and PC. Although its developer had a close historical connection to Nintendo through work on the Super FX chip, the little green hero never received an official Nintendo 64 release during the console's lifetime. That makes this new cartridge more than a straightforward reissue: it revisits a missing branch of 1990s console history.

Argonaut's 22 October 2026 teaser shows an M64-branded cartridge, retro-style packaging and early footage of the game. The video points to 2027, but does not establish a specific launch day, price or final feature list. The footage is identified as pre-release material, so presentation and technical details may change.

Why the M64 matters

ModRetro's M64 is an FPGA-based system designed around the Nintendo 64 cartridge ecosystem. Unlike a digital-only compilation, the proposed Croc edition puts physical media at the centre of the experience. It is particularly intriguing for collectors who enjoy new software arriving in formats associated with original hardware.

There is an important distinction to keep in mind: the announcement clearly demonstrates an M64 edition. Anyone intending to use the new cartridge on an original Nintendo 64 should check the final publisher compatibility specifications rather than assume support from the promotional footage alone.

What we are waiting to learn

Argonaut and ModRetro have not yet confirmed the final price, pre-order window, exact release date or whether this version will contain changes beyond the original 1997 game. The new edition is separate from the modern Croc remaster and its releases on contemporary platforms.

Console Revive take

We love seeing the boundaries of old console libraries challenged by genuinely new physical releases. Croc on an N64-inspired cartridge is the sort of wonderfully unexpected project that gives collectors a reason to keep their classic setups ready.
