Blast Corps Returns on PC With New N64 Recompilation, Widescreen and Mod Support

Nearly three decades after Blast Corps arrived on Nintendo 64, Rare's demolition game has gained an unofficial new way to play on modern computers. Developer SlaveOfIDO has released Blast Corps: Recompiled, a fan project that translates the game's original N64 code for native execution on Windows, Linux and macOS.

What the new PC version adds

Using the N64: Recompiled framework and RT64 renderer, the project offers higher resolutions, widescreen and ultrawide display options, high-frame-rate rendering, remappable controls, reduced loading times and support for community-made modifications. Its mod manager can install add-ons without requiring players to rebuild the application.

For anyone who remembers steering demolition vehicles to clear a route for an out-of-control missile carrier, those changes could make an unusually inventive 1997 game easier to revisit. The project also supports Linux and Steam Deck, broadening the options beyond a conventional desktop PC.

You'll still need the original game

This is not a downloadable copy of Blast Corps. The developer distributes code and prebuilt applications, but no Nintendo 64 game assets. Players must supply their own legally obtained copy of the North American 1.1 (US Rev 1) version. Other regional releases are not currently supported, so UK collectors should check the exact version before trying the software.

The developer says no generative AI was used in the project. That is a statement from the project maintainer rather than an independently audited claim.

Console Revive take

It's exciting to see the N64 preservation scene move beyond conventional emulation. A recompilation can extend a game's life on modern systems while reminding players why the original cartridge and hardware remain worth preserving.
